Marvellous Math!

Ruma Wha have been completing some Marvellous Math activities this week.

We incorporated sensory and fine motor activities into our Math sessions and look what we created!

Everyone had a lot of fun and the classroom was a hive of activity.

Ka pai everyone!

Fantastic Frogs

This week we were focusing on the letter Ff for Frog.  Our ‘Great Book’ of the week was ‘The Wide Mouthed Frog’ which was a pop up book.  All the children enjoyed this story and created their own wide mouthed frogs with Helen during our Speech Language session.

We also created frogs with sticking plaster tongues.  We compared the tongue lengths and used the terminology of shorter and longest while partaking in this maths activity.

Check out the Alphabet and Great Books slide below.

Super Shapes

Ruma Wha has been continuing to work on different 2D shapes which we see on an everyday basis around our community.  All the tamariki have enjoyed singing a variety of shape songs as well completing fine motor shape activities of late.

Today we got each child to choose a shape they would like to colour in and we then created the same shape with coloured strips of paper.  They were focused and were able to sign that the two shapes were the same.  Ka pai Ruma Wha!

Marvellous Maths

In Maths this term we have been looking at Geometry, particularly a variety of 2D shapes.

All of our students have enjoyed grouping, building and sorting different shapes.  The children have also been learning the attributes of shapes.

We have also been practising a variety of yoga shape poses over the last few weeks.

Keep up your wonderful mahi Ruma Wha!

Yoga time!

This week we have been working on Yy words such as yoga, yoghurt and yes!

We have been practising a range of different yoga poses over the week.  We even made a variety of shape poses which linked in beautifully with our current geometry unit.

We also made some yummy yoghurt after sequencing this activity digitally on my laptop.  We then reinforced this activity through cutting and pasting the hardcopy into our writing books.

What wonderful helpers we have in Ruma Wha!

Happy Halloween

For the last two weeks we have been looking at Halloween.

We have had a lot of fun creating, singing, counting, reading, and sharing our wonderful work with Room 3.  We have even worked hard with our fine motor skills to thread wool through holes.  This involved a lot of patience, persistence and precision on behalf of all our tamariki.  I commend you all for demonstrating these skills.

To conclude the week we invited Room 3 to join us for a Halloween song or two and share our display of work.  Thank you so much for joining us Room 3, we always enjoy your company.

Amazing apples

Our Letter of the Week for Week 1 was the letter Aa.  The story of the week was “Ten Apples Up On Top” which proved to be a popular story especially when the song was played alongside the story.  You can check this song out with your tamariki by clicking on this link: Ten Apples Up On Top

We also had a little bit of fun and tried to place apples on our heads just like in the story.  We only managed to balance the maximum of three apples before they would all fall down.

We also completed fine motor apple activities and counted the pom pom apples which the children placed on different trees.  Great mahi Ruma Wha!

Pretty patterns

This term our focus for Maths was patterning.  We were specifically looking at repeating patterns.

Our tamariki enjoyed copying and creating their own patterns.  Some children were completing patterns with 2 repeating colours while others were working with 5 or 6 different colours.  The children were always engaged in these fine motor activities while the adults assisted them in reading the repeating pattern back to them.

Each week were linking our pattern activities either into our Letter of the Week, Big Book focus, or our Inquiry topic.

Great mahi Ruma Wha!

Day and Night

This term for Mathematics we are concentrating on Time.

For the first two weeks of this term, we have looked at the difference between night and day.  We have been able to name different activities which we do throughout our day and whether they are performed during the day time or night time.  We then created a night and day picture.

Great mahi Ruma Wha.

Nursery Rhyme Graph

This term Room 4 and 5 are focusing on a variety of different graphs.

Room 3 has been leaving some lovely comments on our blog of late so Room 4 has been replying to their comments. Last week we asked Room 3 what their favourite Nursery Rhymes were.  Room 3 tallied the class votes and sent back their responses to us.  We used their data to form a bar graph.  We discussed the different parts a graph is required to have as a whole class and then created the same graph individually.  The completed graph was then shared with Room 3 and there were high fives from the whole class!  I love these beautiful connections which are constantly being made between Room 3 and 4 tamariki.
