Jolly Letter J

Our Letter of the Week has been Jj for jumping and juggling.

We looked at different animals that can jump and practised our jumping skills with a variety of different songs.  We also worked on jumping over different objects in the classroom.  Jumping can be a difficult gross motor movement for some of our tamariki so jumping on trampolines and practising bending their knees and pushing up quickly has been of great benefit.  Please feel free to practise this skill when you are playing at home with your tamariki.  Kidz Korner and Moveables is another place where all the tamariki enjoy jumping on all the different types of trampolines.

To coincide with our Letter J we made some jiggley jelly.  We encouraged everyone to smell and take part in pouring and mixing the jelly.  Again, the best part of this activity was eating the Strawberry Jelly.  See if you can find the song ‘Jelly on a Plate’ in the slide below.

We were also very fortunate to have Rowan come into Room 4 and 5 to show us his juggling skills.  The children were intrigued and totally captivated by his talent.  The children also enjoyed having a go themselves with the balls and clubs.  It was wonderful to see staff giving this skill a go and wow, Nina was amazing at juggling too!  Ka pai Nina!

We also created a google slide with some writing about jumping.  Enjoy!  Click on this for the audio of the Jumping Google Slide.

Kk is for Kebab

This week we have been focusing on the Letter Kk.  We have been making Letter K’s with playdough and writing on our whiteboard table to perfect the letter.

This term Ruma Wha will be looking at People in our Community who help us.  We had a wonderful visit up to our kitchen in the hall where our beautiful kitchen staff make our scrummy lunches.  The children enjoyed watching Irene and Rhondelle busily preparing the whole school’s kai.  Thank you for allowing us to visit you.  To thank Irene and Rhondelle Ruma Wha performed a song called ‘Dancing in the Kitchen.’  (You can see this song on the Alphabet Slide)

We also visited the kitchen in our Staffroom.  The children enjoyed opening up the drawers and looking inside.  They also saw food being cooked in the oven at that time.  Great learning for everyone.

Another part of our learning this week involved naming a variety of utensils found in the kitchen.  The children were asked to find the same utensil as the computer screen/tv showed.  They completed this task amazingly and learned a variety of new words in the process.

Making the fruit kebabs with Ruma Wha was a lot of fun.  Each child got to take a piece of fruit out of the bag and feel and smell each piece of fruit.  This task encouraged our tamariki to use their fine motor skills firstly to peel as well as cut the fruit.  Ka pai Ruma Wha!  What a fantastic mahi we completed this week.

We hope you enjoy the photos and videos in this post.  Please leave a comment to your tamariki, they would love to hear from you!
