Marvellous Maths

In Maths this term we have been looking at Geometry, particularly a variety of 2D shapes.

All of our students have enjoyed grouping, building and sorting different shapes.  The children have also been learning the attributes of shapes.

We have also been practising a variety of yoga shape poses over the last few weeks.

Keep up your wonderful mahi Ruma Wha!

Wonderful writers!

In Week 4 we were looking at the letter Ww for writing.

As you already know our wonderful Speech Language Therapist is a fantastic author/writer  who has published two books.  The children enjoyed listening to Helen’s books.  You can hear these stories in the slide below.  I am sure the children would love to listen to these stories again with you at home.

The children also got to create their own poem by choosing different pictures to be inserted into our rhyme.  They also completed their own puzzle with ‘et’ rhyming words.

What a lot of wonderful mahi you completed Ruma Wha!    Click here to listen to the Google Slide poems below.

Yoga time!

This week we have been working on Yy words such as yoga, yoghurt and yes!

We have been practising a range of different yoga poses over the week.  We even made a variety of shape poses which linked in beautifully with our current geometry unit.

We also made some yummy yoghurt after sequencing this activity digitally on my laptop.  We then reinforced this activity through cutting and pasting the hardcopy into our writing books.

What wonderful helpers we have in Ruma Wha!

Letter V for Vann, Vaea and vet

This week Room 4 has been focusing on the Letter Vv for vet, Vaea and Vann

We have also been looking at words which rhyme with vet.  We will revisit this word family next week so this week has been a nice introduction to these rhyming words.  Rhyming stories and songs are a great way to improve early language skills in all of our  tamariki.

All the children created a vet headband which they proudly wore for a duration of the day.

We had a lot of fun when Helen came in for our speech session on Thursday.  She brought along a white jacket and a variety of different soft animals.  The children dressed up as a vet and chose whether they wanted to administer a plaster or medicine to make the sick animals better.

Ka pai Ruma Wha!

Jolly Letter J

Our Letter of the Week has been Jj for jumping and juggling.

We looked at different animals that can jump and practised our jumping skills with a variety of different songs.  We also worked on jumping over different objects in the classroom.  Jumping can be a difficult gross motor movement for some of our tamariki so jumping on trampolines and practising bending their knees and pushing up quickly has been of great benefit.  Please feel free to practise this skill when you are playing at home with your tamariki.  Kidz Korner and Moveables is another place where all the tamariki enjoy jumping on all the different types of trampolines.

To coincide with our Letter J we made some jiggley jelly.  We encouraged everyone to smell and take part in pouring and mixing the jelly.  Again, the best part of this activity was eating the Strawberry Jelly.  See if you can find the song ‘Jelly on a Plate’ in the slide below.

We were also very fortunate to have Rowan come into Room 4 and 5 to show us his juggling skills.  The children were intrigued and totally captivated by his talent.  The children also enjoyed having a go themselves with the balls and clubs.  It was wonderful to see staff giving this skill a go and wow, Nina was amazing at juggling too!  Ka pai Nina!

We also created a google slide with some writing about jumping.  Enjoy!  Click on this for the audio of the Jumping Google Slide.
